In an industry often characterised by its relentless pace and constant change, it is a poignant moment when a beloved television figure bids farewell to an audience they have served for nearly two decades.
Such was the scene that unfolded on Channel 9, as viewers witnessed an emotional sign-off that tugged at the heartstrings of many.
During Monday night’s bulletin, Melissa Downes appeared alone and announced that Andrew Lofthouse, her esteemed on-air partner known affectionately as ‘Lofty’ to colleagues and viewers alike, is retiring after a remarkable 17-year tenure.
‘The chair beside me is tonight empty because our dear friend and colleague, Andrew Lofthouse, is retiring,’ she said, trying to fight her tears. ‘I thought I would at least get through the intro!’
‘One of the true gentlemen of television… Lofty broke the news today, revealing, after a lot of thought, he is signing off.’
A touching montage of Lofthouse’s career highlights followed his colleague’s emotional introduction. In the recorded video, he also addressed his departure, citing a health issue.
‘Now is a good time for me to pull back [and] slow down a little after this dream career. Thank you for putting your faith in me, and in us,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Brendan Hockings, 9News Queensland News Director, lauded Lofthouse as a ‘rare gem’ and an ‘exceptional talent,’ praising his humility and team spirit.
‘He is the journo who offers to carry the tripod. The colleague who makes you a cuppa. The news anchor who does not see himself as any more than part of the team,’ Hockings said.
‘The example he has set as a newsman is the gold standard.’
As the bulletin drew to a close, Downes tearfully expressed her gratitude for Lofthouse’s years of service, saying, ‘Congratulations. Enjoy retirement, more time with your beautiful family, and life on the other side of the screen.’
Meanwhile, Lofthouse’s parting words were a humble acknowledgement of the viewers who ‘made it all worthwhile,’ and a reminder of the privilege and joy he found in his work.
‘It’s been an amazing privilege and a wonderful experience with the best in the business,’ he said.
‘I’m currently dealing with a bit of a health issue so now is a good time for me to pull back and slow down a little after a dream career. Thanks for watching!’
Lofthouse began his journey with 9News as a weekend presenter, but it was not long before his talent and charisma saw him transition into the weekday spotlight.
Throughout his career, Lofthouse has been at the forefront of reporting some of Queensland’s most significant events. His voice and steady presence guided the community through the harrowing 2011 and 2022 floods, and he was there, broadcasting live from the impact zone of Cyclone Yasi, the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake, and the excitement of the Paris Olympic Games last year.
