Are celebrities just like ‘normal’ people? Do they experience the same highs and lows in life, or have they evolved beyond that? Do they bleed blood like us, or is that gold running through their veins?
The question of whether celebrities are as ‘human’ as the rest of us has been bandied about for as long as they have existed. But today, the questions end.
Mothers everywhere are rejoicing because Kim Kardashian has recently been discussing some of the brutal realities of pregnancy and childbirth.
It all started when Kim K posted a beautiful nude photo of herself to Instagram, with the caption: “I’m going to get even bigger & that’s beautiful too! I’m blessed to even be pregnant!”
Following that, the glamorous socialite tweeted about her weight gain: “OK I’m 52 lbs (23.5kg) up today … and I still have 6 weeks to go.”
But the real honesty began when she fearlessly admitted that she hated being pregnant: “I’m gonna keep it real: For me, pregnancy is the worst experience of my life!”
Finally – women uttered – the celebrity pregnancy myth was busted. Here was a woman who was toiling through her pregnancy and whose body was completely given over to it. Unlike what we see from so many other celebrities, Kim was being real about what she as going through.
It was clear, even glamorous celebrities suffer through the day-to-day pains of growing humans inside their bodies.
But it didn’t take long for Kim to shatter the illusion by discussing a ‘push present’. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what a push present was either… until I thought about it for a bit.
On her blog, Kim said: “Do you guys believe in a push present? I never did, but all of my friends do!!! We have the funniest e-mail chains discussing it. One friend got a special diamond ring she always wanted, and another friend got a new car! I like the idea of a push present – after nine months of pregnancy it’s a sweet and well-deserved thank you. We women go through an entire pregnancy carrying a baby … of course it only makes sense that we get something amazing to show how amazing we are! LOL!”
I’ve heard of women receiving gifts following the birth of their children; earrings, a ring perhaps.
But what does Kim K want?
For the birth of her second child, Kim (who’s worth $72 million according to Forbes) has decided a fitting push present would be a simple $1 million Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker.
I don’t believe Kim is seriously saying she wants to be compensated for being pregnant, but more thanked for her work. And the way I see it, it is work. It’s a labour that women weren’t asked to take on, it’s just part of our biology. Whether or not material gifts should come into the picture is a matter to be settled between the concerned couples and families. Of course, many people would say that the baby is the greatest gift – and they’re probably right.
But what we’ve learned here once again is that the type of gift a celebrity like Kim K thinks is a worthy push present, is above and beyond what most normal people would expect.
So, as to the question of whether celebrities are just like us – let’s hope if Kim ever needs a blood transfusion, the hospital has liquid gold on hand.
