Maritime enthusiasts wanted

Do you love everything maritime and could spend hours in the Australian National Maritime Museum? Then why not consider volunteering?

The museum is currently seeking people to join its team of volunteers. Volunteers can assist the museum in many different ways including bringing its former naval vessels to life by guiding on its ships HMAS Vampire, HMAS Onslow and HMAS Advance and assist in the new Action Stations experience.

The Action Stations experience, housed in the brand new Waterside Pavilion and opening 8 November, is an exciting new way for guests to experience the compelling history of the Royal Australian Navy in an immersive journey through the dangers and dramas of military life at sea. The project reinterprets and enlivens the museum’s much-loved ex-Navy vessels using hi-tech and innovative technology to offer an interactive experience.

Volunteers are also needed to become tour guides to share the museum’s stories with people from across the globe or to join the Guest Experience team, welcoming people to the museum. Opportunities also exist behind the scenes assisting in many other areas of the museum such as conservation, model making, fleet maintenance or administration.

There are numerous perks to volunteering, such as developing new skills, building on existing strengths and learning new and interesting facts to share with others. It is an opportunity to meet like-minded people and make friendly social connections. Volunteers will interact with local and international visitors and have exclusive opportunities to see behind the scenes at the museum.

Volunteers also receive a museum uniform, access pass and discounts to the museum and YOTS restaurant, free passes for friends and family, as well as a range of other benefits. All they need is enthusiasm, the ability to commit to regular times and an interest in Australia’s maritime history. Full training is provided.

Museum director Kevin Sumption commented on the importance of the volunteers, saying, “We couldn’t run our museum without our volunteers – they provide a wonderful service. Action Stations is an exciting new cultural attraction for Sydney, constructed by the best of Australia’s builders and architects. Its opening is highly anticipated and volunteers will be crucial to its success.”
