As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of consumer goods, it is not uncommon to witness changes in the products we have been familiar with.
However, when it comes to our cherished treats, any alteration can feel personal. This brings us to the latest development that Nestlé, the makers of KitKat, has announced–’a slight change’ in its 4 Finger chocolate bar.
On their official website, Nestlé explained, ‘We want you to know we have made some upgrades at our KitKat factory to bring you the same KitKat 4 Finger bar recipe you know and love, now with an even crispier ‘snap’.’
‘There has been a slight change in the size of our wafer moulds to make them compatible with the new technology. This means you will start to see the KitKat 4 Finger change from 45g to 42g.’
While some may raise their eyebrows with this change, Nestlé assures customers that the quality and taste of the KitKat will remain unchanged, promising ‘the same smooth quality milk chocolate and fresh wafer ‘snap’ that we know KitKat fans love.’
To sweeten the deal and perhaps soften the blow of the downsizing, Nestlé is introducing a new flavour to the KitKat family: KitKat Neapolitan.
This new variety is a nod to the classic Neapolitan ice cream, featuring layers of creamy vanilla and sweet strawberry flavours, all encased in the traditional smooth milk chocolate and crispy wafer.
‘We are excited to launch KitKat Neapolitan for the summer season – it is a trifecta of taste,’ said Nestlé Head of Marketing Confectionery, Melanie Chen.
‘With the new chocolate featuring classic flavours, it is bound to spark a debate over which iconic ice-cream-inspired flavour comes out on top.’
The introduction of this new flavour is a strategic move by Nestlé to celebrate the Australian summer and to keep the brand fresh and exciting in the minds of consumers.
‘Look out for our newest sensation made possible by this factory upgrade, KitKat Neapolitan, available at retailers in Australia from January and in [New Zealand] from mid-February,’ Nestlé wrote on KitKat’s website.
As for the cost, the 4 Finger bar currently retails for $2.50 at Coles, and a full-size block can be purchased for $7.
This phenomenon of ‘shrinkflation’ – where products get smaller but prices stay the same or increase – is not new. It is a trend that has been observed across various industries, often attributed to rising production costs or changes in market strategies.
As consumers, it is essential to stay informed and to understand the reasons behind these changes. While some may accept the smaller size for the same price, others might feel the need to voice their opinions or seek alternative treats that they think would offer better value.
We at YourLifeChoices are curious to hear your thoughts on this matter. Have you noticed other products shrinking in size while retaining their price? Share your experiences and opinions in the comments below, and let us discuss the changing landscape of consumer goods.
