This research has led to improved detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, with a steadily increasing number of men surviving long after diagnosis. It has helped identify potential treatment options that could kill aggressive cancer cells and potential ways to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients.
One in five people affected by cancer live outside metropolitan areas and, due to huge out of pocket costs involved with travelling to treatment in urban areas, often experience poorer outcomes compared to people in cities.
Cancer Council NSW wants to ensure that everyone – regardless of where they live in NSW – has the best chance to access the care they need.
A Cancer Council NSW advocacy program has led to $149.5m in financial support from the NSW Government for people in regional and rural NSW who need to travel for healthcare. The resulting fuel rebates and subsidised accommodation mean that those living in regional and rural NSW are less likely to skip essential appointments and improve their chances of survival.
More Australians now embrace preventable measures against cancer. This wouldn’t be possible without crafted educational campaigns to raise awareness – again, financed largely by charitable endowments.

It is leading the way to eliminate cervical cancer in the Western Pacific and contributing to Australia being on track to be the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035. You can do this in four ways:
