We’re in the last few days of June, which means a couple of things. Notably, the end of end of financial year (EOFY) sales. (Can an end have an end? It seems so!) It’s a perfect time to seek out big bargains before the tax year comes to a close.
For some, it also means the last few days before a month without alcohol. These are the Aussies who participate in Dry July, an excellent campaign that raises funds for those affected by cancer. As the name suggests, it involves abstaining from alcohol for the month, and seeking sponsors for doing so. All funds go to a most worthy charity, the Dry July Foundation.
If you are considering taking part, it leaves you with a few days left to enjoy a glass or two of your favourite tipple. We’re not suggesting you go overboard. Drinking responsibly is another important aspect of health. But for those looking for a round of ‘last drinks’ before a month of abstinence, we’ve found some great specials.
BWS before Dry July
BWS has all three categories – beer, wine and spirits – covered in their current catalogue. For the beer lovers there’s a case (aka a slab) of Cooper’s Australian Lager on sale for just $55. That’s $13 off the regular price. Also, a case of one of my favourites, Asahi Super Dry, has been reduced from $62 to $56.
If wine is more your style, then consider the Lobster Reef sauvignon blanc. Two bottles of this New Zealand wine will cost just $26, saving you $14. Or if you’re after a winter red, try the Cow Bombie, a cabernet merlot from Western Australia, down from $18 to $11 per bottle.
For lovers of spirits, BWS has a couple of great deals on whisky. Or is it whiskey? Well, it depends on which special takes your fancy. (For the record, both spellings are acceptable.) A bottle of The Glenlivet, a 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky is on special at $75, down from $90. Alternatively, you might like to try the Sheep Dog peanut butter whiskey, reduced from $69 to $55.

There’s no other EOFY sale like David Jones’

What better way to ward off the winter blues than with a good old-fashioned winter roast. You can do just that with a whole or half Australian lamb leg roast for just $9 per kilo. That’s 25 per cent off the regular price.
A range of healthy options are available at half price this week at Coles. These include John West tuna tempters (down from $2.70 to $1.35) and Campbell’s Country Ladle soups at just $2.25.
