Whether it’s nostalgia or the fact they’re just plain delicious, here are some retro desserts that shouldn’t be forgotten.
1. Golden Syrup Pudding
Quick, easy, economical, and delicious. What’s not to love?
2. Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
With its rings of tinned pineapple and glace cherries, pineapple upside-down cake has a very particular aesthetic that isn’t really in keeping with the modern bakes we’ve become used to. Sure, it might look like it’s from a bygone era, but who can deny the taste? It’s just so good.
3. Baked Alaska
Mixing ice cream and cake, what could be better? Well, this dessert takes things a step further by adding meringue on top – which was often set on fire. Why not add a bit of drama to our puddings?
4. Lemon Meringue Pie
Done wrong, this dessert can taste a bit like washing-up liquid. But done right, lemon meringue pie is the perfect pudding for warmer weather. With buttery pastry, zingy lemon and soft meringue, it’s delicious.
5. Spotted Dick
Spotted dick is a rare sight these days. A steamed pudding made with suet, dried fruit such as currants give it that ‘spotted’ effect. Largely ruined by dodgy school dinners, steamed puddings can be lighter and tastier than you might think. Plus, they’re the perfect vehicle for lashings of custard.
6. Black Forest Gateau
Back in the day, nothing said celebration like a Black Forest Gateau. It’s more over the top than your average cake, with multiple layers of chocolate sponge sandwiched between thick cream and cherries. The dream.
7. Trifle
If it was good enough for our nan, it’s good enough for us. Fruit, alcohol-soaked sponge, cream and custard, and jelly – all the elements are great, and it serves up a big hit of nostalgia.
8. Bananas and Custard
Perhaps the simplest of all, but still delicious. Unless the bananas were only added to hide the lumpy custard.
9. Bread and Butter Pudding
Some may argue that they don’t understand how bread can be dessert. but when buttered bread is layered with an egg custard mixture, some spices and some dried fruit, it becomes something magical. It’s also handy to have the perfect recipe for when you need to whip up a dessert with pantry staples.
And last but by no means least …
