Hot on the heels of the demise of Fantales, Allen’s has been sneakily, slowly deleting other lollies from supermarket shelves.
Red Ripperz, Sherbies and Milkos are going, going, gone.
I’m trying to feel sad about this but I’ve never even heard of Red Ripperz. Is it a state thing? Like Jatz and Savoy biscuits? And I can’t remember the last time I saw bags of Sherbies and Milkos on the shelves.
I guess we can feel sad about it, but if people aren’t buying them, then why still make them?
This week’s best deals
Aldi
Sensible: Killarnee whole lamb leg, $10.99/kg. Cheaper lamb sale yard prices are finally filtering down to the retail level, but don’t expect them to go much lower than this. If you can’t face a whole leg of lamb, cut it up and use it for curry.
Indulgence: Haberdashery sale. Sadly, this has declined over the years. Do buy the Guttermann thread pack, at $29.99 it represents a terrific bargain. Don’t buy the mini sewing machine or hand-held sewing machines. They are rubbish and do not work, even as toys for children.
Bonus: Vote for your favourite Aldi product and be in for the chance to win $1000. If Di San Pre Wash Stain Remover doesn’t win it, I might just lose faith in the world.

Coles
Sensible: Blueberries, $3 a punnet. Ridiculously cheap for a fantastic food. Good snack, good in cakes, good in smoothies. Why did we not latch on to blueberries earlier?
Indulgence: Loads of footy finals food on special, starting at $1.50 for Kirks soft drinks. Is any of it healthy? Oh hell no. It’s been a while since I’ve seen quite so many high-fat, high-sugar products unashamedly promoted together. Fruit platter anyone?

Woolworths
Sensible: Morning Fresh Dishwashing Liquid, half price $4.75. You will prise my Morning Fresh out of my cold, dead hands. Other brands come and go, but I always go back. Plus it’s regularly on half-price special. Great new smelly flavours a bonus.
Indulgence: Bonne Maman jams, $6. Not the cheapest, or possibly even the best jam, but the jars are worth it. The open-style design makes them ideal for repurposing for anyone who does their own bottling. Seen at school fetes everywhere.

IGA
Sensible: Navel oranges, $2.49/kg. It’s prime citrus season so get them while they are at their peak.
Indulgence: Earth Choice Dishwashing Tablets, $14.25, save $5.25. No need to spend $60 on dishwashing tablets. We use these all the time and our dishes come out just fine. In fact, due to my cheapskate nature, sometimes I use half a tablet and the dishes are still fine.

Red Rippers were originally called Redskins
Yes, Peter, that possibility popped into my mind about two hours after I uploaded this!!
Never heard of them. When did theuy appear ?
I’ve been eating all 3 since I was a child early 1960’s especially the sherbies and the red rippers were originally red skins.
Not realy into sweets, only chocolate
