Ten easy bakes that aren’t banana bread

Banana bread seems to be the go-to self-isolation bake. From Paul Hollywood to Jamie Oliver, chefs have been using bananas in their bakes – and, admit it, you’ve been at it too.

Here are 10 ideas (with recipe links) for easy bakes that aren’t banana bread.

1. Baguettes
They might look so fancy you daren’t try them, but baguettes are seriously simple to make. This recipe from French blogger Emma at Casserole et Chocolat has an English translation, too.

2. Eggless cake
No eggs? No drama – try Jamie Oliver’s eggless chocolate cake.

3. Cheese scones
If you bought too much cheddar, forget another cheese on toast moment and make some cheese scones instead.

This cheese scone recipe from Nigel Slater will get you started – it’s for one big indulgent cheese scone.

4. Carrot cake
Along with bananas, it’s likely you’ve got some spare carrots. Put them to good use with Mary Berry’s recipe. Chrissy Teigen is a big carrot cake fan.

5. Cheesecake
You can set cheesecake in the fridge but there’s also one you can bake. Try this recipe from soft cheese favourite Philadelphia.

6. Biscuits
Why not take advantage of Arnott’s big recipe release and try recreating some family favourites at home? They released the Monte Carlo, the Scotch Finger and the Iced Vovo,

7. Flapjacks
Another one that doesn’t need eggs, which is helpful depending on what’s in your cupboards right now. Try this River Cottage recipe.

Flapjacks can be tricky, so keep your eye on them while they’re in the oven.

8. Irish soda bread
Bread’s big on the bake-at-home list right now and soda bread is especially easy to make. Be warned, it’s so moreish you might eat the whole loaf the same day. Try this recipe from Delia Smith.

9. Cupcakes
Another one that’s great with the kids; cupcakes are fun and indulgent. Ice in bright colours, or go for something romantic like Nigella Lawson’s Love Buns.

10. A showstopper
Whether it’s a birthday cake, something for Sunday afternoon tea, or just ‘because’, the biggest and best is saved for last.

Go for a gorgeous sponge, tons of icing and even an unusual flavour. Our suggestion as a starter for 10 is this gin and tonic cake from Baking Mad.

Have you been baking more than usual this year? Have you broken away from your stock standard favourites?
