The ABC recently featured the story of Neysa King, who came out of retirement to begin a new vocation as a nurse. As someone who is a year away from entering my 60s, I found it quite inspirational.

Not only had Ms King never been a nurse, she found herself somewhat of a square peg in a round hole as she went to university to attain her qualifications. Here was a women in her 60s surrounded by 20-somethings, but Ms King was soon “part of the gang” and the rest is now history.

I had a mid-life career change when I was 47, going from software tester to writer and journalist. I have no intention of changing again but it’s nice to know that the option will be there should I choose (or be forced) to do so when I’m in my 60s, or even later.

If you were to take up a new vocation later in life, what do you think it would be? Or what would you like it to be?
