Researchers have discovered that ‘hoppy’ beers, or beers containing large amounts of hops, such as Indian Pale Ales can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

They found the chemicals that give IPAs their distinct bitter flavour also act to prevent clumping of protein plaques in the brain – a strong indicator of Alzheimer’s.

However, they cautioned against excessive beer drinking as high levels of alcohol are a known trigger for dementia.

The researchers said the research shows that hops could be the basis for foods that will lessen the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Hops are also found in herbal teas and soft drinks.

Will this make you switch to hoppy beers?
