It seems ‘Trumpisms’ have made their way down under, with unwarranted allegations of voter duplicity being circulated on social media.
Looks like some right-wingers are questioning the honesty and integrity of our democratic system. It would be interesting to see if this questioning happens when right-wing candidates or causes are favoured.
Still the Australian Electoral Commission concedes the theoretical possibility of people voting more than once at different polling stations. However, such a proposition seems incomprehensible.
Even if they were able to or did this, history shows it would be ineffective. A less than minute minority, 0.1% equivalent to roughly 14,000 people, were thought to have double-voted in the 1993 national poll. This number has declined since then. So it seems that even in cases of double voting, the overall integrity of results would remain intact. There would probably be more donkey votes than double votes.
Whether you vote yes or no, please don’t let unverified, fringe theories deter you from confidently placing your votes. Your opinions matter. Crackpot theories stemming from the king of crackpots do not.
What do you think of these theories? Do you, or do you know anyone who distrusts our voting system?
