Who doesn’t love a meat pie – just occasionally? Okay, so a few of you. But for those who do, you’re sure to want to know where to buy the pie crowned the best in Australia.
But first, what makes a great meat pie?
Mike French, chief judge of the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition, says there are three things he looks out for when judging: “A crispy pastry top with flake, a structurally sound pie bottom and the ultimate pie filling.”
He says the perfect pie should be “baked through with a nice golden colour” with a consistent 3mm thick side and bottom.

Whittlesea Bakehouse’s pie-maker Adrian Caporetto told 7News the ‘secret’ to his winning pie starts with quality ingredients.
“I’m a firm believer if you use good ingredients, good flour, good margarine, you keep it simple and love what you do, then that’s what counts,” he said.
