The central Tasmanian town of Liawenee has been listed by social media users as Australia’s most miserable town – at least in winter – according to a Daily Mail report.

Liawenee is officially Australia’s coldest permanently inhabited place, with average winter high temperatures of just 7 degrees, and average lows of -2.

Even the name ‘Liawenee’ comes from an indigenous word meaning ‘frigid’.

The crown was awarded to Lawenee after a German tourist complained on social media about winter weather in Melbourne, with commenters quick to inform the man there are places in Australia for the cold.

Other Taswegians chimed in to say they thought Queenstown, on the state’s west coast was worse due to high rainfall and long periods of fog in winter.

Ballarat, in Victoria’s Central Highlands region, was also singled out for its freezing winters. I have a bit of a confession – Ballarat is my hometown, and I can attest to how brutal the cold can be there.

I remember needing to pour water over my car’s windscreen most mornings from May to September due to the buildup of ice.

“You’ve obviously never experienced a winters day in Ballarat. Pretty much the coldest place on Earth. 1: Ballarat 2: Antarctica,” one user commented. I concur.

Canberra was another city that kept popping up in people’s suggestions. The nation’s capital gets particularly bitter in winter, and regularly sees daily lows lower than Melbourne.

A bit of a gripe I have is that they’re equating cold with miserable. I like the cold (probably because of where I grew up) and find it too hot most places.

Where do you think Australia’s miserable town is? What about hot towns in the north that regularly hit 40 degrees? That sounds like hell to me.

As you age hot places are better than cold places because the warmth eases arthritic pain.

I remember a fellow worker from Allora in Qld having to boil the kettle to pour hot water into the outside toilet before number 2s on frosty mornings.
Also, Toowoomba’s living legend, Clive Berghofer, recalled rounding up the family milkers in the mornings and purposely stepping in the fresh cow dung to keep his bare feet a little warmer. Strange but true!
Has anyone noticed that Defence Bases seem to be located in towns that are among the hottest in summer and the coldest in winter. Cheaper property prices i guess.
