No one wants to pay a cent more tax than they have to, but some are just taking the mickey when it comes to deductions.

The Australian Tax Office recently released some of the more bonkers deductions people have tried to claim.

ATO assistant commissioner Tim Loh said amongst the worst offenders are a worker who claimed deductions for six different cars despite owning only one and an accountant who wanted to become an opera singer and claimed $20,000 on opera gowns and a trip to Italy before earning a cent on her new career. You think the accountant would at least know better.

According to the Daily Telegraph H&R Block director of tax communications Mark Chapman said his firm had seen a tradie try to deduct a European holiday as he was “researching his craft” looking at old buildings, a worker trying to claim the cost of cigarettes as stress relief, and an actor trying to claim a facelift.

I knew a guy who claimed his son’s private boarding school fees as ‘training’ costs.

Have you heard of any other dodgy claims?
