An Aussie homeowner recently took to social media to share their encounter with a bold new in-person scam that’s prompted them to issue a warning to others.

The incident involved a young woman in her mid-20s, dressed in a plain high-visibility vest, who claimed to be a government scout offering a service to paint or repaint house numbers on the kerb for a fee of $50.

Fortunately, the homeowner’s instincts kicked in, and they declined the offer.

They decided to do some online research and discovered similar scam stories emerging in her area. It became evident that the young woman’s pitch was a ploy to deceive unsuspecting residents.

The cautionary tale serves as a reminder for people, particularly those in more vulnerable older age brackets, to remain vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited offers.

The government scout claim implying it was a legitimate service may an issue. However, a few years ago, community groups were going around my suburb offering this innovative door to door service of painting on numbers on the kerb as a fundraising method for a legitimate good cause. It served a purpose for ambulances,police and visitors being able to locate your home particularly at night.
I have also got metal house numbers free from the Brisbane City Council Ward office and pop riveted these on to the side of my two wheelie bins. This also helps when the bins are put out the night before so they can be collected the next morning. It is also handy to identify which is your bin/s when in a complex where multiple bins are put out together.
