Woolies customers in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania will begin to see the 15-cent reusable plastic shopping bag disappear from the local supermarket from June.
With the departure, it will mean Woolworths is no longer offering the reusable bags anywhere in Australia after the bags were phased out in Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT.
The move was originally sparked by legislation introduced in WA that forced Woolies to stop selling the bags there.
The 99-cent reusable canvas bag, as well as the 20-cent paper bags, will remain available.
Jeanette Fenske, director of stores at Woolworths, told the Herald Sun the end-goal is to reduce bag use as much as possible.
“Bringing your own bags is the very best outcome for the environment, and we encourage our customers to keep up the great work,” she said.
“Paper bags will continue to be available for those who forget to bring their own – but ultimately we want to sell less bags altogether.”
How often do you remember to bring a bag to the supermarket?
