Bondi locals have successfully campaigned to ban beach parties on their famous strip of sand.
The local Waverly Council recently voted to ban commercial parties on the beach after local opposition.
The council will make an exception for Mardi Gras celebrations, Sculpture by the Sea and the annual City2Surf.
Councillor Paula Masselos said Bondi beach was “not an event space or a venue or a brand”.
The ban is specifically for commercial events on the beach as consumption of alcohol is already banned.
Fair enough, private enterprises shouldn’t be making money on public land. But in my mind, it’s a teensy bit like when people move in near a pub and then complain about the noise.
Thankfully Australia has a zillion stunning beaches, so if you don’t like how Bondi is tracking, just jump in your car and go to another.
This is not the first time a commercial enterprise bit the dust on Bondi. A proposal to establish a European-style private beach club was knocked back in 2020 after a massive backlash by locals.
