Moving right along from the axed Melbourne Commonwealth Games and suggestions are already being offered for an official mascot for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.

There was Olly the kookaburra, Syd the platypus and Millie the echnida in Sydney in 2000, but local community groups in Brisbane are pushing for a marine mammal that’s found in Moreton Bay.

They want to put the spotlight on a creature affectionately known as a sea cow, because it lives on a diet of seagrass. Do you know it? It’s a dugong.

Dragon Boat Pumicestone president Michelle Hanton says: “It is so unique and it would really [put the] spotlight them.”

She says she has seen dugongs in the Pumicestone Passage while out on the water with her boat club. “They are such an elusive, shy creature, but when we do [see them], it’s so exciting. The whole boat stops if we see a dugong.”

Officials say information on how the community can help select a mascot will be released at an “appropriate time”.

What would be your pick for a Games mascot? What’s been your favourite so far?
