We’re repeatedly told that the best way to stay safe from hackers is to keep our devices updated. News about a recently discovered bug means it’s time for Apple users to update now.
IT websites are warning that in January Apple released iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 to address some major vulnerabilities. However, cybersecurity firm Trellix says it has discovered problems with these updates that could allow an attacker to access your messages, call history, location data, photos and more on either your iPhone or Mac.
Trellix says it has seen no evidence that these vulnerabilities have been exploited, but users should update their systems now.
“The vulnerabilities uncovered by our team this week have fundamentally broken their security model,” said Doug McKee, director of Vulnerability Research at Trellix, adding that the bugs could have, in theory, exposed affected Apple devices to a wide range of attacks.
Apple has released a series of emergency security updates in the form of iOS 16.3.1, macOS 13.2.1 and iPadOS 16.3.1.
