Peanut butter is a favourite spread for many. It has essential vitamins, minerals and fats, can be stored in the pantry and seemingly lasts forever. But does it?
Information site Greatist says the shelf life of peanut butter depends on the brand and if its natural or commercial. A commercial peanut butter with stabilisrs should last:
• 9-12 months in the pantry unopened
• 2-3 months in the pantry after opening
• 12 months in the fridge unopened
• 3-4 months in the fridge after opening.
Most name-brand peanut butters contain added stabilisers or preservatives, such as palm oil, benzoic acid and hydrogenated oils to further the shelf life.
Healthline says while fresh peanut butter is soft and creamy, bad peanut butter may be hard and dry. It may also have a dark brown appearance, compared with the usual light tan colour. And if it smells more sharp, soapy or bitter, it’s likely gone bad.
Basically, use your senses and if in doubt, throw it out.
To maximise the lifespan of peanut butter, seal the jar securely, keep it in a cool, dark place (e.g. the top shelf of your pantry), maybe pop it in the fridge and use a clean spoon or knife when you scoop.
