Could washing your hair with ‘contaminated’ shampoo really be a health concern? Yes, says consumer watchdog the ACCC.
A batch of shampoo sold nationally is being recalled over fears it is contaminated with a bacteria that could cause infection or illness.
The A’kin Mild & Gentle Shampoo Fragrance Free & Hypoallergenic 500ml bottles were being sold online and at David Jones, Woolworths, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse stores and independent stores from May 15 to September 15.
The affected products are marked with batch number AW2D01, which can be found on the back label above the barcode.
The recall notice says the shampoos may be contaminated with Enterobacter Gergoviae – a type of bacteria that is generally harmless to healthy people, but can cause those with immune system deficiencies or bacterial allergies to become severely sick through direct exposure.
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Germany previously warned that the bacterium
“Consumers should stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the ACCC says. “Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice. For further information, consumers can contact McPherson’s Customer Service on 1800 651 146.”
