Got a can of Scotchgard in the back of your laundry cupboard? May be time to get rid of it.
Global giant 3M is facing a $58 billion lawsuit for the use of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS), which are also known as ‘forever chemicals’ as they don’t break down in the body. About 98 per cent of the world’s population are estimated to have them in their bloodstream.
They are in many common consumer products such as school uniforms, makeup and non-stick cookware, and Scotchgard.
The lawsuit is a test case in the US to explore the claims that people have suffered personal injury from the toxins, including testicular and kidney cancer.
There are claims 3M knew about it and concealed the health risks for more than 20 years.
Oddly, while 3M claims there is no substance to the claims, it plans to stop manufacturing all forms of PFAS by 2026.
Have you ever tried to cut back on chemicals? Does this news worry you?
