If you open your freezer right now, is there a layer of ice surrounding the walls? For most people, the answer is yes. It’s almost impossible not to get a build-up of ice in your freezer, unless you feel like chipping ice off the walls every week.
But did you know that just a 2mm layer of ice around the edges of your freezer can increase your electricity usage (and therefore your bill) by as much as 10 per cent. There is much more than 2mm of ice in my freezer, that’s for sure.
It’s a pain, but it pays to defrost your freezer at least once a year. Also make sure the door seals are in good working order, as leaking cold will also use more power.
If you plan to be away from your house for an extended period, empty your freezer completely, give it a good clean, then turn it off or unplug it and leave the door open.
