I don’t know about you but there are few things I find more frustrating than when I can’t find the start of the cling wrap, or it tears easily or not in a straight line.

Perhaps I am easily frustrated. Still, consumer group CHOICE has rated the best and worst cling wraps, so you can at least avoid one source of frustration in the kitchen.

CHOICE experts tested 23 types of cling wrap that you’re likely to find in major supermarkets, as well as some products that are available online.

“We found that all the cling wraps in our testing performed well in terms of adherence and how they go when used in a microwave, but they do really vary when it comes to ease of use,” says CHOICE editor Marg Rafferty. 

“Ease of use is an important thing to consider when purchasing cling wrap. We all know how annoying it can be when you’re quickly trying to pack lunch in the morning, and the cling wrap keeps getting jammed or sticking to itself.”

“When testing ease of use, CHOICE marks a product down if the cling wrap gets caught, splits easily, clings to itself, the roll jams, or if you can easily scratch yourself with the cutting edge,” says Ms Rafferty.

Do you still use cling wrap or have you switched to something that is better for the environment? 

 

“If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly alternative to cling wrap, there are lots of products out there that you can use,” says Ms Rafferty. 

“Wax wraps are one popular alternative to cling wrap. These cloth wraps are coated with beeswax, soy, or other plant waxes, which makes them flexible and helps them stick to food or containers. Silicone food huggers or reusable silicone film are also a good option for people looking to reduce their cling wrap use.”

I use Goliath brand, an Aldi product, and that decision is not intended to start an argument about which brand is better. I would, however, like to offer a couple of suggestions that have made my use of cling wrap easier. Firstly, I change to position of the roll so that instead of the cling wrap unrolling from the top, it unrolls from the bottom and secondly, I push the tabs located either end of the box in to anchor the roll.

Why use any? I just put things in glass containers with a lid.

The only cling wrap I use is to put over the top of the paint tin before I put the lid back on, to prevent rust.

Hint – turn paint tins upside down to store. Of course the obvious, make sure the lid is securely on.

I have also placed the paint into a good quality plastic container with lid and press down to extract excess air. Old gyprock plastic buckets are good – Aldi’s Yoghurt containers, are two I have used.

I don’t  use cling wrap at all. Hate the stuff! Like Incognito, I use glass bowls with glass lids. Cheaper and no likelihood of any unwanted chemicals leaching from the clingwrap into the food.

I have no idea whether this works or not but I have heard that placing cling film in the freezer will aid in locating that errant end that disappears into oblivion. Also easier to unroll from the roll itself. Have no room in the freezer to test this. I too buy Aldi because its cheaper.

I have stopped using it after many years, it is much easier to use the various sizes of the freezer bags!

Putting the whole article into a bag and then putting it into the fridge for storage.
