A gang of around 30 feral cows is terrorising the small town of Lebrina, Tasmania (about 38km northeast of Launceston), wandering the streets causing widespread damage.
The group of bovine bandits has been tearing down fences and damaging cars and have so far evaded authorities.
Labrina locals told the ABC the herd is most active at night, moving into forested areas during the day, adding to the difficulty in capturing them.
It might seem funny, but the cows pose a serious risk for drivers on the road, with several accidents already recorded.
One resident said he hit a cow while driving his ute into Lebrina at the speed limit of 80km/h.
“The cow ran straight into the front and side of the car,” he said.
“Car was obviously a write off and the cow killed instantly.
“This is how long it’s been going on. Hopefully it gets resolved before someone is badly hurt or killed.”
Lebrina is part of Launceston City Council area, who are ultimately responsible for clearing the cattle in this situation. Council chief executive Sam Johnson says officers are working tirelessly to manage the cattle, but that they are proving extremely difficult to capture.
“This month alone, City of Launceston regulations officers have visited Lebrina on multiple occasions in direct response to call-outs from the public about livestock on public roads, with many of these occurring after hours,” he said.
“Unfortunately, our officers have so far been unable to confine the cattle in question, with the herd regularly moving into forested areas.”
What do you think they should do with the cattle? Has anything like this ever happened where you live?
