A coin collector is reporting that two rare $2 coins are fetching up to hundreds of dollars over their face value since the death of the Queen.
Joel Kandiah is a well known numismatologist, which means he studies the history of money and currency, and he found the 2012 Red Poppy and 2013 Purple Coronation coins have shot up in demand.
On the night of the Queen’s funeral, a mint-condition Red Poppy for a record $400.
Mr Kandiah said the coins are the lowest minted coloured circulating $2 coins in Australian history and as a result have always been in demand, but that has increased since the Queen died.
The Red Poppy coin had a mintage of 503,000 coins and the Purple Coronation had a mintage of 995,000.
Red Poppies have increased in value from $150 to $370 and Purple Coronations have increased from $75 to $180.
