Do your bend your neck to stare at your phone all day? Are you doing it right now? You may be headed for something doctors are calling ‘tech neck’.
Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern found tilting your head forward 45 degrees can increase the pressure on your neck by as much as 25kg, and leaving it in that position for a long time can cause injury.
Referred to as ‘tech neck’ repeated strain on the bones, nerves and muscles can cause chronic pain. Muscle stiffness, joint inflammation, pinched nerves, arthritis, and even bone spurs or herniated discs can also occur.
The average Australian spends around 150 minutes bent looking at their phone every day. Around one in five of us admit to staring at our phones for more than five hours each day.
