Toll operator Transurban is warning motorists across Australia to be on the lookout for an SMS phishing scam doing the rounds.
Scammers are sending out the texts to random numbers, advising them they need to pay a fee for recent travel on a toll road, and to click a link to be taken through to pay.
Unfortunately, the link leads you to the scammers site and any banking details you enter will promptly be stolen.
Transurban says they will never ask customers to reply to an email or SMS with their financial information or personal information. Customers are encouraged to always log in directly to their account.
A Transurban spokesperson explains these scam texts are being sent to the general public, including people who may not have an account with any toll road operator.
“Our Cyber Security Operations team is working with telecommunications providers to identify and pass on phone numbers sending these texts,” the spokesperson says.
“We have reported over 2000 unique scam messages to telecommunications providers so that they can block these and protect our customers and the Australian public.”
