Parasite expert Dr Vito Colella has warned 7News that recent warm and wet weather across the country has increased the risk of exposure to Toxocara roundworms in our pets. The nasty parasites can make your furry friends really sick and can even transfer to humans.
Toxocara roundworms are found in the small intestines of dogs and cats, with eggs from the female parasites passing through the animals and into the environment via their poo.
This is a particular problem with dogs, who often poo in public places, making spreading the roundworms to other dogs as well as humans much more likely.
A number of different health issues can occur if a human becomes infected with Toxocara roundworms, including abnormal blood test results, enlargement of the liver, loss of appetite, muscle and joint pains, as well as abdominal pain and rashes and even vision loss.
These symptoms occur because the worm larvae migrate through the body, causing tissue damage along their path.
Dr Colella says dog owners should dispose of their pet’s poo as quickly as possible and also wash their hands after interacting with soil or objects that could potentially be contaminated.
“This is important for all dog owners, but particularly so for those with young children who we know are at greatest risk,” he said.
