Another Australian food favourite has disappeared from our supermarket shelves and this time it’s Arnott’s Classic Assorted variety packs.
I’m feeling a bit nostalgic, but in reality I haven’t bought a pack in year and I suspect I’m not alone.
Back when I was a checkout operator – ahem 30+ years ago – these sold like the proverbial hotcakes but I can’t remember seeing them at anyone’s house or in a tea room for years.
The marketing hook was “bringing your favourites together” and the pack included Shortbread Creams, Kingstons, Monte Carlos, Scotch Fingers, Butternut Snaps and Choc Chip. When they turned up in the tea room at work the race was on to see who could eat the Kingstons first.
Arnott’s confirmed they were withdrawing the product due to poor sales.
Former Arnott’s food scientist Russell Stuart told 7News’ Sunrise program said it may be the beginning of the end for biscuits.
“They’re declining, there’s so much other new stuff out there and only the oldies eat it,” he said
“I’m off the bikkies myself but it’s our nannas, it’s our grandparents they’re hurting, in my opinion.”
Arnott’s will continue to offer its other variety packs including assorted cream biscuits and family favourites.
