Bill Shorten has announced he will leave Federal government in February after almost two decades in Canberra.

He has announced he will take up the position of vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra.

The NDIS minister announced his decision at a press conference with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese yesterday.

Mr Shorten led the Labor Party for six years in opposition, including through two federal election defeats. He stepped down from the leadership following Scott Morrison’s 2019 federal election victory.

He first came in the public eye during the 2006 Beaconsfield mine disaster when he was the public face of the union. He was elected to parliament the next year.

He was eventually promoted to the cabinet, serving first as Assistant Treasurer, then as Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation and Minister for Workplace Relations in Julia Gillard’s government. After Kevin Rudd replaced Gillard as prime minister in June 2013, Shorten was briefly Minister for Education

Do you think he was a good politician? Should politicians serve their full term?
