Feeling bloated after a meal is gross and nobody likes it. But certain foods seem to trigger the response more than others.
Gastroenterologist Dr Ahmed Albusoda has revealed to MailOnline the foods, medications and activities that he believes are worst for bloating.
1. Drinking through a straw
Dr Albusoda says drinking through is the worst thing you can do if you’re trying to avoid bloating. He says it’s because using a straw pulls more than twice the amount of air into your stomach than regular sipping.
2. Antibiotics
Antibiotics may be great at killing nasty bacteria, but they’re also something of a sledgehammer for other good bacteria. Taking antibiotics can reduce you gut flora and make digestion more difficult, leading to bloating.
3. Cruciferous vegetables
What!? Vegetables on list? Unfortunately, yes. Dr Albusoda says high-fibre vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts, also known as cruciferous vegetables, contain raffinose, which is a sugar that stays undigested until bacteria in your gut consume it.
This in turn creates gas, which leads to your bloating.
4. Eating too fast
Turns out the speed at which you eat also has an impact on incidences of bloating. The faster you eat, the more air you swallow and the quicker you’ll end up bloated.
