Have the Oscars lost their shine

      I haven’t watched the Oscars since Cate Blanchett lost to Gwyneth Paltrow in 1999. For me, it was never more obvious then that the awards are a popularity contest as opposed to a merit-based recognition of talent.

      It goes for far too long, the jokes are tired, maybe one out one hundred acceptance speeches are actually entertaining – which goes to show how much actors rely on writers – and the songs mainstream rubbish.

      I tried to sit through the red carpet, at least the dresses were entertaining, but then female actors started taking umbrage when the media asked them who designed their outfit.

      Sure, they were right, they didn’t usually ask the men, it’s a bit sexist. But these women almost always get these dresses for free, at least they could give the person handing over thousands of dollars of frocks for nada could get a bit of a plug.
