Have you seen an ‘R’ plate on a car?

There is a new campaign to help nervous drivers who are returning to the road after a traumatic experience.
Drivers can display a ‘R’ plate to show other motorists they require more patience and space, because while the physical results of an accident can be obviously treated, sometimes the mental impact can take its toll as well.
It’s designed to encourage drivers who experience anxiety to get back on the road and for other drivers to show patience and empathy.
It’s not an officially sanctioned program and should not be confused with ‘restricted’ licences.
The signs will be distributed by MyCar which was formerly known as Kmart Tyre and Auto. -

This is a copy of comments on my FB page:
“…A new car plate has been launched to help drivers who are returning to the road after a traumatic experience or prolonged absence. The R plates are designed to indicate to other motorists that a driver should be given some extra space and treated with more care as they navigate the roads. The initiative puts the mental health of drivers at the forefront and acknowledges the anxiety they may be feeling following trauma, an accident, injury or break from driving…”
I WILL CERTAINLY KEEP MY DISTANCE FROM THESE DRIVERS, WHO IN MY CONSIDERED OPINION, ARE NOT READY TO BE BACK ON THE ROAD!!!
They are being distributed by Australian service and repair company mycar, formerly Kmart Tyre and Auto, in a push to encourage more empathy on the roads. “We care for those with physical injuries from a road incident, but we rarely consider the mental toll road trauma can take,” mycar said. “The R plate signifies to other road users that the driver may need some extra care, giving them time and space to recover. Recovering drivers can confidently return to the road knowing they are in a supportive space.”
USING THEM IS AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT YOU ARE NOT FIT TO DRIVE, SO YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR LICENCE SUSPENDED UNTIL YOU HAVE MEDICAL OPINION THAT SAYS YOU ARE!!!
The return plates are not an officially sanctioned road item and as such have been linked to a baby on-board sticker.
WHENEVER I SEE A “baby on-board sticker” I THINK IT IS A PAEDOPHILE INVITATION STICKER FOR THE OPPORTUNIST WHEN YOUR BACK IS TURNED!!!

I think this is a nice courtesy situation. The driver is nervous and we can kindly support their return to driving again. But, if their previous accident was due to old age or a health diagnosis, or inability to safely have full control of their car .. then please suspend their drivers licence permanently. Better to be safe than sorry.

I like the idea, but how ‘kind’ are other motorists when behind an L-plater? I’ve seen some awful behaviour. Everyone has to start somewhere!
