What’s your favourite bird?
The Guardian’s biennial to choose Australia’s favourite bird is on again. The first winner was the magpie, followed by the black-throated finch and the last winner was the blue-feathered superb fairywren.
My favourite bird is the wandering whistling duck. Not because of its appearance, but just because of its name. I like the idea of a duck just strolling around whistling.
It actually gets its name from the fact that its wings whistle when it’s flying and its loud whistling calls but I choose to ignore this.
They were once named tree ducks – which is much more boring – despite the fact that they spend much of their life in or around water.
I’d also like for one of Australia’s black cockatoo species to get up, just because they are so spectacular. They turn up on our street sometimes and they make me so happy.
