A number of energy drinks have been pulled from shelves in Australia after it was found they contain more than nine times the caffeine of a can of Coke, and almost twice the legal limit.

Around 700 different energy drinks were seized from retailers in South Australia after health inspectors found 18 stores were selling them illegally.

The GFUEL, Bang and Raze Energy drink brands were found to have the most caffeine, with 300mg per 473ml can. Other brands seized include C4, Ghost, Ryse Fuel, 3D and Redcon 1, which were all found to contain 200mg of caffeine per can.

SA acting chief public health officer Chris Lease told news.com.au most of the retailers were unaware the imported drinks were illegal and that his department would work with stores to educate them on the regulations.

“Often, these drinks are imported from overseas and retailers do not realise that they do not comply with our regulations,” he said.

“We’re working with retailers to educate them on the regulations and stop these drinks from making their way onto shelves, and issuing penalties to repeat offenders.”

Have you seen these drinks on the shelves anywhere?
