Senior ABC presenter Laura Tingle has sparked controversy with her comments declaring Australia a “racist country” during a panel discussion she participated in at the Sydney Writers Festival over the weekend, The SMH reports.

“We are a racist country, let’s face it. We always have been and it’s very depressing,” she told the gathered audience.

Drawing accusations of bias given her position at the national broadcaster, Ms Tingle laid the blame for Australian attitudes at the feet of the Coalition, and in particular current leader Peter Dutton.

She said she could not recall a previous political leader saying “everything that is going wrong in this country is because of migrants”.

No doubt Australia has a chequered past when it comes to race, but do you think Australia is still a racist country? What have your experiences been like?

Yes but much less so than it used to be. Racism these days is more to be found in some individuals rather than institutions and I don’t expect that to change.

Every country is racist to an extent . All humans have prejudices of one sort or another . All political parties have their racist elements . The main thing is that its not institutionalised and that society doesn’t act based on prejudice and racism.

I stopped watching the ABC many years ago, when I first noticed a political slide to the left
and a woke agenda, creeping in. It really annoys me that I have to pay for something that belittles Australia at every opportunity.

In every country there are racist comments and the same applies in Australia.
In my eighty years the racism has reduced significantly, the same as in every country .
In many situations l classify the remarks and actions noted as a bullying reaction.
I would suggest an understanding from all folk would provide better results
