King Charles III and wife Queen Camilla will touch down in Australia this Friday 18 October and the public will have the opportunity to get up close to the royals from Tuesday next week.

While plenty will be excited about the visit, somewhat predictably, members of the Australian Republican Movement (ARM) are planning on using the latest royal visit as a springboard for what it says is a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ protest.

Calling the visit ‘Monarchy: The Farewell Tour’, the ARM is launching another pro-republic campaign asking us to ‘wave goodbye’ to the monarchy.

“60 per cent of Australians say they’d prefer an Australian Head of State to King Charles III,” says ARM co-chair Esther Anatolitis.

      “Australians want a Commander-in-Chief, an Advocate-in-Chief, a Promoter-in-Chief, a Champion-in-Chief, a Guardian-in-Chief and a Representative-in-Chief.

They want a republic which stays in the Commonwealth, retains economic and defence alliances like AUKUS, and makes minimal changes to our current system.”

The republican cause always likes to make noise when there’s a royal visit. ARM claims more than half of Aussies want to ditch the King, but what do you think?

      Yes, it absolutely is.

We need an Australian head of state.

Australia has changed its anthem from “God Save the King”. Why not next change the flag to exclude the “Union Jack” next ? Then proceed to become a Republic. We should then still be part of the Commonwealth with just minimal changes.

No. We have far more important priorities to deal with – like finding a way to abolish the toxic two-party system and get rid of self-serving career politicians and implement a government run by responsible, honest people with real-world experience and a focus on what is best for our society. Simply abolishing the connection to the monarchy will do nothing to resolve the very serious problems this country faces.

I do not agree with the 60% statement, how was it arrived at ??
Do we want to become a Republic ??
Which Republican Model do we use ??
What will the make up of the Parliament be ??
What will be the Term of Office for each Parliamentarian ??
How will the Head of State be selected ??
what will the Term of Office for the Head of State. ??
ALL the above would have to be answered, and agreed upon, before any change can be implemented.

Many Australians don’t want to change anything with regards to the constitution. Unfortunately for those of us who want Australia to be come a republic we’re not enough in numbers.A bipartisan approach is not possible, particularly with the current parties. The no republic people will always say there are far more important priorities to deal. Well there always have been and always will be so that’s a futile reason not to change anything really. I doubt there will be an Australian Republic in my lifetime and many of us have just given up in the face of relentless opposition and resistance to any change. There will unlikely be any change to the constition in the next 20 – 30 years after the 2023 defeat of the Voice. Sadly, we’re still a country of very conservative, insular and inexorable people.

So far, I have never seen or heard a justification for changing to a Republic; I see a particular racial group appear to be the driver, and they have no justifying reason other than historical misconceptions. We have the best and most stable form of government, The Westminster System, the envy of most republics; a referendum was held not so long ago, resulting in resounding support for our current system. One of the benefits often overlooked is the head would be a political appointment; just imagine Albanslezy being
President or any of his hangers-on that should be enough to put you off a republic.
