It’s a rough idea that you get to choose a name for a human when it’s just a few days old. Names come and go, what if your very trendy name suddenly becomes a bit daggy?
Data analysts McCrindle has crunched the numbers and discovered the Australian names that are slowly falling out of fashion, and a lot of them are the ‘traditional’ names that were so popular a couple of decades ago.
Charles, which was particularly popular during the turn of the century, has dropped to 99 of the top 100 names list. That’s quite a fall. However, as an ancient name, I feel it will hang in there.
Other names that left the list altogether include Vincent, Elias, Ashton, Connor and Jaxon.
For girls, names that have disappeared off the top-100 list include Jasmine, Claire, Charlie and Gracie.
Social researcher and McCrindle’s director of advisory Ashley Fell told news.com said instead of researching what names are popular, they decided to review the names that have fallen out of favour.
“When looking at names which have decreased their popularity over the last decade however, we found some names which were in the top 20 are now closer to 100 or almost falling off the list,” she said.
“Names such as Joshua, Matthew and Luke for the boys – names which were particularly popular in the ’90s and early 2000s, are losing their popularity for parents to Gen Alpha.
“And names like Emily and Claire, which were also popular among parents to Gen Z and Gen Y babies, are losing their popularity with today’s parents.”
However, they did also list the top names, which for boys are Oliver, Noah, Henry, Leo, Theodore, Hudson, Luca, William, Charlie and Jack.
Top girls’ names are Isla, Amelia, Charlotte, Olivia, Mia, Ava, Matilda, Harper, Lily and Hazel.
