Substantial rebates are available in one state for drivers who own electric vehicles.
But they must be claimed before 1 January.
Two years ago, the former NSW state government announced it would provide 25,000 $3000 rebates for those buying full battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars.
So far just over 10,000 have been claimed.
The NSW Government said: “As part of the Minns government’s reform package, rebates for EV purchases and exemptions for stamp duties will cease on 1 January 2024.
“However, transitional arrangements will ensure those who have purchased or placed a deposit on an eligible EV, and are awaiting delivery of the vehicle, will still be eligible, regardless of whether the vehicle has been delivered by that date.”
The government said the incentives were being phased out because “they risk driving up the cost of EVs, resulting in increased profits to manufacturers”.
To be eligible for the rebate, the vehicles must be purchased for a dutiable value of less than $68,750 be registered on or after 1 September 2021.
The eligibility criteria for the Electric Vehicle Rebate can be found on the NSW Government’s Electric Vehicle Strategy webpage.
