Driver distraction is responsible for many accidents, authorities warn, which is why drivers are not even allowed to hold a mobile phone while driving. But did you know about another rule that could result in a big fine and the loss of three demerit points?

Transport and Main Roads Queensland warns in a Facebook post that eating or drinking while driving can cause “serious” distraction.

“You can be fined $575 and 3 demerit points (in Queensland) if you don’t have proper control of your vehicle – or if you’re driving without care or attention.

“So make sure you’re not one-handing the wheel or taking your eyes off the road to eat.”
But what about drinking water? Or coffee?

“So you have to have two hands on the wheel at all times?” one person commented. “That doesn’t make sense.”

“What! I drink a coffee on my way to work!” another added.
“Try driving a truck for a living and not drinking water or eating while driving! To say you can’t do this and be attentive is ridiculous,” said a third.

A Channel 7 report explains the detail of the rule.

While it is not technically illegal to eat or drink while driving, motorists can be fined if doing so leads to distraction.

Police therefore do have the right to pull you over and may also slap you with a hefty fine if they believe eating or drinking behind the wheel is negatively affecting your driving ability.

In NSW the fine is $448 and three demerit points and if you transgress In a school zone, it is $561 and four demerit points.

In Victoria, the penalty is $387 fine and three demerit points.

What do you think of this rule? Is it there just for idiots?
