A couple of weeks ago Australia’s biggest ever Lotto jackpot was won. Two entries shared the record first division amount of $200 million. If the entries were for a single person rather than syndicates, that’s $100 million each.
That sort of number really doesn’t register in my mind in any real sense. I’m not sure I would know what to do with such an astronomical amount.
This got me thinking – if I were to win lotto, just how much would be enough for me to do all the things I’d like to do in my remaining decades. Without having sat down and done any calculations, my first thought was that even $1 million would be more than enough.
Then again, a few overseas sojourns wouldn’t be bad. And neither would a decent-sized inner city house, one with a room for my (far too big) collections of books and vintage board games. That would likely set me back a few million.
So my current thought is maybe $7 million. Of course this is purely an exercise of fantasy, and I know there are many Australians struggling to live on income somewhere near the poverty line.
But sometimes it’s nice to dream. If you were to ‘plan’ for a lotto win, how much do you think would be enough to secure happiness for the rest of your time on Earth?
