It was reported this week that Melbourne is now larger than Sydney, but it seems there has been a little creative accounting going on.
Sydney was ahead until the rules were changed and the figures included Melton on the city’s outer – very outer – fringe.
Sydney first overtook Melbourne in 1905 and Melbourne was predicted to take over again in 2031-32 but the new boundaries and Melbourne’s attraction to migrants have pushed that figure forward.
Liz Allen, a demographer at the Australian National University, said Melbourne’s population had been growing faster than Sydney’s in recent decades due to its appeal to international migrants as well as Australians living in other states.
