First there was Optus, then Medibank. Now Telstra has become embroiled in a big data breach, although this time the telecommunications giant says no hackers are involved.
It admits that up to 130,000 customers have been affected by an “unacceptable” leak.
The personal details of unlisted Telstra customers – those who requested their phone numbers not be made publicly available – have been published online as the result of an internal error.
Names, addresses and phone numbers are among the details published.
Telstra says it’s in the process of communicating with customers whose details were “incorrectly” made available via Director Assistance or the White Pages. They are also being offered free support through IDCARE.
Chief financial officer Michael Ackland said while the company had regulatory obligations to provide those services, there had been a “misalignment” of the databases.
“We’re sorry it occurred, and we know we have let you down,” he said.
