We’re all aware of the gender pay gap. But did you know there also appears to be an obesity pay gap?
Analysis from the US Department of Trade has found obese people working in white-collar professions make much less money on average than thinner peers in the same role.
They found men with a university degree and a BMI over 30 earned five percent less than their peers with a healthy weight.
The difference was even greater in women, with obese and higher educated women making an average 12 percent less than their slimmer colleagues.
The research accounted other factors that can influence your salary such as race, age and marital status – and the disparity was still there.
The study’s authors suggest a ‘fat prejudice’ exists in the corporate world, leading obese people to miss out on billions of dollars in earnings.
