Five million older and vulnerable Australians now have access to a new, and more effective, shingles vaccine. Aussies aged 65 and over can access the two-dose Shingrix vaccine as part of an $800 million immunisation program.

Shingrix is more effective than its predecessor, provides around 10 years of protection and usually costs up to $560, the RACGP says.

But there appears to be a problem in some areas, according to a member.

She wrote: “I was so grateful for the story you ran on Shingles vaccinations being available now for 65 and overs (usually around $600 and only free if over 70). So good. Would not have known without your story. Such an important vaccine! Thank you.

“However when the nurse gave me the vaccine this morning at a busy doctor’s surgery in NSW, she said they were only given 15 shots, and she has her doubts about supply for the second shot you need a few months later.

“Not good enough I don’t think.”

Have you encountered any problems with the supply of the Shingrix vaccine?

My local GP clinic in northern NSW told me they dont have the vaccine now but will have it around March of next year. This seems to confirm the shortage account. A bit odd, I mean the government wouldn’t over-sell an initiative would they?
