Food delivery service Deliveroo has immediately ceased operations in Australia and entered voluntary administration.

The decision leaves thousands of users and delivery drivers in the lurch. The UK-based food delivery company launched its Australian app in 2015 in a crowded marketplace that also includes UberEats, Menulog, DoorDash and many others.

Eric French, chief operating officer for Deliveroo Australia, paid tribute to the company’s Australian staff in a statement.

“This was a difficult decision and not one we have taken lightly,” he said.

“We want to thank all our employees, consumers, riders and restaurant and grocery partners who have been involved with the Australian operations over the past seven years.”

      Were you a Deliveroo customer?

re: William Shu, very wealthy owner of Deliveroo. Did he make a huge profit in Australia and then skip the country without paying taxes? Was his intention to increase his personal wealth and then dump his underpaid staff in one swift move?
