I read that politicians are trying to ban social media for young people and I have to laugh.

The genie is out of the bottle. We will never catch up to the tech know-how of the younger generations.

Want to ban mobile phones? Good luck with that. Many parents insist their children have them. And apart from anything, most kids have to have a laptop these days for school and everything you can do on a phone you can do on a laptop.

Want to ban social media for certain age groups? Go right ahead, the kids will simply find another platform that we don’t know about.

Outright bans rarely ever work. These proposals are probably more about pandering to the public with inflammatory headlines than workable solutions.

Social media is a growing problem because of the way many kids have become addicted to it and the often false or misleading content on offer.
Real world social, cultural and sporting activities are all taking a back seat to online activities and IMO individuals and society will be worse off as these activities decline.
Most schools have now banned mobile phone use during school hours with mixed results and I think the same would apply to any attempt at wider bans.
I don’t know what should be done on this one other than parents should ensure that their kids understand that most of the content on social media is not real.

I find it hard to believe that Mobile phone use in school was not banned from day one. I see the main problem is not what they watch but the time they are on these gadgets, totally addicted to the exclusion of other activities, parents treated them as easy cheap babysitters and are now paying the price; they need to take back control.
