Australians are being advised to consider changes in mobile data plans as telecommunications companies have begun capping mobile internet speeds without modifying prices.
YourLifeChoices’ affiliate WhistleOut says approximately half of top providers, including Telstra and Optus, have implemented speed caps in their plans over the last nine months.
Money pundit Joel Gibson calls this ‘shrinkflation’ – where a product’s quality or size dwindles while the price remains. Mr Gibson wants Aussies to check that any ‘upgrades’ to mobile plans don’t include a reduction in data usage or speeds. If they do, look for a better deal.
Optus chief, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, says these measures are aimed at covering the costs of 5G network advancements. WhistleOut advises users to consider speed as a key factor when they choose mobile data plans. Affording customers less speed, especially those untouched by excess data speed need, could yield financial savings.
